Quick Apartment Sketches

I had originally said i wanted the designs to be very smooth and soft shaped, however it took me a little while to realise i went too literal in that sense, and things were looking too feminine. I then looked mens apartments within animation to get inspiration. I decided on this sofa design, it has harsher shapes that previous designs but still has soft look to it within the arms and back of the sofa.

I wanted to make sure this apartment conveyed that a man lived there, i added (perhaps in a sexist manner) things like a games console, open disc cases, cups not on coasters, a plant sitting on top of books etc. I wanted to create a cluttered but warm and lived in look.

Since the living and kitchen area are one big open area, i realised i needed to design it too, i didn’t want to over complicate it with any fancy designs, and didn’t want to look to clean or spotless. I decided it was best to visually show this by adding clutter, such as a pot on the stove, dirty dishes in the sink and on the counter tops.

I also began shading the kitchen image also.

Apartment Layout

As our film is based in an apartment for its entirety, we realised a good apartment design was needed.

I began by looking at animated films based in apartments such as ‘The Secret Life of Pets’ and also looked at films by “Illumination Entertainment’ as we really liked the smooth and contrasting shapes they use within their designs.

Then i realised that there wasn’t much point designing things to go into the apartment until we worked out the shape of the apartment, and what needs to be seen and not seen. I began by sketching out Birds Eye Views of apartment idea’s.

I originally drew this out as i like the idea of an open living/kitchen area, i drew the rest of the apartment only to realise that the film will fully take place only in the living room/kitchen area, so the rest is not needed.

In the end we decided on the design below, only we are changing the bookcase to a computer desk.

Early Apartment Concepts

In the beginning when discussing the look of the house apartment, we said we wanted something clean and glossy but also warm and lived in. Shelley and Niamh looked at some examples as you can see below…

What i like about the image above is the outline work, it reminds me very much of ‘101 Dalmatians‘. I like the cluttered look of all the crockery yet the floor is still very clear and clean.

The two images above are of the same apartment but drawn in slightly different colouring and brightness, although both are lovely i actually prefer the one directly above this text, the rougher line work is something i enjoy.

This image is closer to the style we like in the film mentioned in a previous post “June: Life is better when you share the ride” I enjoy the blunt shapes seen the picture on the wall and the half hazard style of the bring work etc. I plan to use this image as a close reference when designing the apartment.

The two images above are drawings i did earlier in the week before we decided on the stylistic approach. I do still enjoy the style in the top drawing, and plan redesign and develop it in the new style.

Early Character Concepts

We have already discussed the potential to make the turtle character more stylised and ‘boxy’ but below are my first concepts of the turtle, in some i tried to make him do ‘doggish’ poses such as begging, rolling over etc.

I did the most of these roughly in pencil in a sketchbook, this helps explain just how early these sketches are, and i am already working on the next version of the turtles style journey.

Creating a Story

In the first number of days we were playing with the idea of a story with a racoon and a story with a turtle. In the end we decided that the turtle story made more sense, and although simplistic, had a point and a lot of heart.

The basic idea is that our turtle character see’s an advert on TV about how dogs are a mans best friend, this leads him to decide he wants to be a dog. The film carries on from their in comical montage of the turtle trying to do things like a dog would, only much slower, clumsier and much more comical. Example, Turtle tries to pee against a flower pot and begins to pee before his leg begins to lift, once the leg is fully up, he loses his balance and falls over onto his shell.

We took inspiration from the Secret life of Pets, and i even drew a concept based on it…

House Development

Further development was need in colour and style for the house, so i continued with my concepts…

For these concepts i was mainly playing around with the colour of the house in question, and the neighbouring houses. As a group we really liked the idea of the houses all being different colours, so i began by trying pastel shades such as yellows, pinks and blues, in the next concept i decided to colour the tree in Autumn leaves, then decided to colour the houses in warm autumn colours also, i also played around with the idea of panelling, which i really loved, but felt it looked to victorian for the style/era our story is in.

Since i enjoyed the warm colours i then tried a red version of the house, but felt it resembled a barn, finally i came to the idea of having the houses in warm autumn colours, but having ‘our house’ in a colder blue shade. This would help make it stand out and also imply what type of emotions are inside that home.

In the bottom two concepts i also added a porch onto the side of the house, as Tyrone had suggested it could look like and give us a ‘stage’ for our film, It does look nice, however as a team, we all preferred the porch  at the front of the house, and felt it would set the scene much better.

Since i enjoyed drawing the plant pots on the porch in earlier shots, i decided to add some greenery to the walls of the house as well, i think it looks nice, but could complicate the modelling or add to much extra work for the time schedule.

Since we had decided on the film being set in autumn, then started playing with colours to portray this well. For the concept below i simply coloured the houses in warm tones, and then took an image from the web and edited it photoshop, the film itself wont be in this blurry style, but it was a nice and simple way to see how our houses would fit into that landscape.
