What’s Next?

So… thats it. I am officially finished University. So whats next?

Well, something i don’t talk about too much on my blog is that i have a major heart condition. I had my last surgery when i was 11 and it has done me very well, but as the years go on it has declined and so at the end of this year i am having two surgeries.

My recovery time in 2004 was a few months, and it will be the same this time. Due to this fact, i don’t want to go out now and start working for a studio and when i’m a few months into it say “hey i’m away for a few months, bye!” i am always feeling tired and struggling to get work done, i don’t want to start my professional life this way. I would much rather wait and begin when i am at the best health i can be, and can produce the best work i can.

So for now, whats the plan? Sit around and wait? HELL NO.

I am an artist and illustrator at heart. It’s what i enjoy doing, and its probably what i am best at. Through the past few years i have gotten the odd commission to do paintings of peoples pets etc and sold some water colour illustrations also.  So i am turning this into a business.

The Crafty Cat

I want to do all things craft (paint, draw, design, tapestry etc) and so i wanted the word ‘craft’ in my business name somewhere. My name is Emma Catherine, and it was my close friend Mark Lisk who said “What about the crafty cat?” and i was sold. Being an animal lover as well, it was perfect.  I got straight to work designing a logo.

I knew straight away i wanted the logo to be a cat. Due to my dear love of water colour painting, i came up with this…

I simply took a basic cat silhouette from google and then started playing around with splats of colour with my paints, I combined them and made this, and for once, i actually love it. It embodies everything about me and my designs. Colourful, playful, delicate and usually involving an animal.

For the font i knew i wanted something quite natural, but since my own handwriting is pretty rubbish, i found this for free on Dafont.com and i think its perfect. It is called ‘Jellyka- Estrya’s Handwriting‘.

Although ‘The Crafty Cat’ has not been announced to the public yet, everything has been set in motion. I have made a Facebook Page…

And an Instagram Account…

Although as you can see, both of these are empty as i don’t want to start uploading to them until i have announced the business and the pages are ‘live’ so to speak.

I have also ordered business cards, once these arrive i will officially be ready to roll…

Even though this venture has barely begun, i am very excited and hopeful for the future. If it goes well i will eventually start an  Etsy store too.

Business Cards

With my Business Card design i didn’t want to go to ‘artsy’ as i wanted them to remain profesional and to the point.

I went for a simple white background with black paint splat design. I wanted to add a feminine touch, and as mentioned in  a previous post, i really like the ‘rose gold/copper’ look at the moment. So i decided to go with that. I simply made a copper boarder and placed the necessary information within it. I ordered them so that the copper font would appear metallic in it’s finish

Looking at them now, i do wish i had with something a little more creative, but still keeping it plain, but these can always be redesigned at a later date.

Matte Painting

Currently i am working on painting what will be out of the apartment window. We know already that we need to see lots of city buildings and apartment buildings, but we also need to decide what type of lighting will come from the window too. I already have a pretty strong image in my head that i will work towards, but below are some images i may use as inspiration or to help make the window view more convincing.

I will be working on this in Photoshop and paint using my Cintiq, i will be spending the weekend on this and hope to have a finalised matte painting by Monday.

Early Apartment Concepts

In the beginning when discussing the look of the house apartment, we said we wanted something clean and glossy but also warm and lived in. Shelley and Niamh looked at some examples as you can see below…

What i like about the image above is the outline work, it reminds me very much of ‘101 Dalmatians‘. I like the cluttered look of all the crockery yet the floor is still very clear and clean.

The two images above are of the same apartment but drawn in slightly different colouring and brightness, although both are lovely i actually prefer the one directly above this text, the rougher line work is something i enjoy.

This image is closer to the style we like in the film mentioned in a previous post “June: Life is better when you share the ride” I enjoy the blunt shapes seen the picture on the wall and the half hazard style of the bring work etc. I plan to use this image as a close reference when designing the apartment.

The two images above are drawings i did earlier in the week before we decided on the stylistic approach. I do still enjoy the style in the top drawing, and plan redesign and develop it in the new style.

My Illustrations

Making a story book involved a lot of drawings and even more painting. I spent a lot of time creating them, and really enjoyed it.

However, sadly during this time my grandmother took very ill which meant a lot of time was spent away from work and spent with her in her final days. Sadly, my granny passed away on Christmas Eve morning.  I will miss her deeply and i am truly glad i was able to go spend time with her rather than miss out from doing work at home.

This news meant i took a good week or more off of work.

Before my grannies dementia and illness progressed, she was a very talented water colour artist. She was the reason that i became so enthusiastic about art, and so i thought it was a great way to say goodbye to her and deal with the grief.

Below are all of my paintings…

House Development

Further development was need in colour and style for the house, so i continued with my concepts…

For these concepts i was mainly playing around with the colour of the house in question, and the neighbouring houses. As a group we really liked the idea of the houses all being different colours, so i began by trying pastel shades such as yellows, pinks and blues, in the next concept i decided to colour the tree in Autumn leaves, then decided to colour the houses in warm autumn colours also, i also played around with the idea of panelling, which i really loved, but felt it looked to victorian for the style/era our story is in.

Since i enjoyed the warm colours i then tried a red version of the house, but felt it resembled a barn, finally i came to the idea of having the houses in warm autumn colours, but having ‘our house’ in a colder blue shade. This would help make it stand out and also imply what type of emotions are inside that home.

In the bottom two concepts i also added a porch onto the side of the house, as Tyrone had suggested it could look like and give us a ‘stage’ for our film, It does look nice, however as a team, we all preferred the porch  at the front of the house, and felt it would set the scene much better.

Since i enjoyed drawing the plant pots on the porch in earlier shots, i decided to add some greenery to the walls of the house as well, i think it looks nice, but could complicate the modelling or add to much extra work for the time schedule.

Since we had decided on the film being set in autumn, then started playing with colours to portray this well. For the concept below i simply coloured the houses in warm tones, and then took an image from the web and edited it photoshop, the film itself wont be in this blurry style, but it was a nice and simple way to see how our houses would fit into that landscape.
