Seasons of Food

An idea Julie and i settled on was to create four final paintings, two each. Each one depicting a season, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. This idea came about when we realised different foods are thought of with different seasons, an example being fruit and vegetables could represent the harvesting season of Spring or Summer.

We decided that Julie would do Spring and Summer and i would do Autumn and Winter.

I quickly decided for Autumn i wanted to focus on Autumnal colours, such as warm, oranges, reds, browns, yellow’s etc. Similar to the colour the leaves turn at this time of year.

Because Autumn is the season that Halloween falls in i thought it would be a nice idea to focus on Pumpkins.

For Winter i was stuck for idea’s for a while, i had an idea based on christmas were hills could be made from christmas pudding’s but i thought it wouldn’t actually represent winter, so started looking at arctic images for inspiration and was thinking of focusing on marshmallow ice bergs, but finally decided to focus on ice cream, i can create a castle made from ice cream cones and multiple coloured ice creams, i could add sprinkles, candy canes or even chocolate to the scene.

Inspiring Research Images

Searching for images through google i found some great images that i think will help Julie and i get on the right track.

An italian looking world made from mainly italian ingredients and keeping to an italian colour scheme. The colours and vegetables remind me of Ratatouille, so it could be based in France, who knows.

An underwater world made from mainly tropical fruits, i love it, the pineapple mountains in partuclar give me great idea’s.

An octopus made from a banana, makes me wonder what else there is around the house that could be an animal in disguise.

Marshmallow icebergs, in this image look cute, painting a large vast area withmuch larger icebergs, may make the ‘cute’ marshmallows look much more intimidating.

Cauliflower sheep, perhaps in a world made entirely of vegetables and other farming/harvest crops?

Turtles shell made from a  crusty bap, love it!

Animals all made from fruits and vegetables, could go very well with the farm/harvest theme.

A pink sweet world that reminds me very much of Sugar Rush from Wreck it Ralph. There are so many elements from this image that just make me want to start sketching out ideas!

This image makes me think rustic country side, perhaps in France.  The bread roofs and hills look almost good enough to eat.

This is a screen shot i took from the animated series of short’s ‘Rollin Wild’ where all the animals are comically ver overweight, these flamingos reminded me of the pink lollipop tree’s in the image above.

Insects made from fast food? Eek!

Aubergine Penguins, so cute!  They really have a stance of how a penguin would really stand.

If Frozen had been made from sweets, this would be it! Amazing!worldoffood-header

this image get me so excited and just make me want to doodle out tons of idea’s, lets get started!

For our project we came with a story of a robot dog walker, we presented it yesterday and had to make some serious alterations, but here it is to show anyway…

as you can probably tell it didn’t read as well as we had hoped, and there was too much going on in the background rather than just telling the story or getting the idea across

Tom Sito

Tom Sito was born in 1956 and is an animator who has worked on an impressive amount of well known films such as who Framed Roger Rabbit, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, Pocahontas, The Lion King, Fantasia 2000 and many more. In 1995 he left Disney to help set up the animation company ‘Dreamworks’. When there he worked on the likes of ‘The Prince of Egypt, Spirit, Stallion of the Cimmaron’ and Shrek.

We were shown a video talk of Sito which was interesting and funny, i thought i would share it here…

Making a 15 Second Animation in 4 weeks.

Our first Week of Creative Strategies, and we got our first project.

Last year, our final major project was ‘make a 15 second animation in 8 weeks’. Our first major project of this year is to do the same thing, in the half the time!

Talk about an exciting challenge?

This time i am working with Mark, Blaine, Julie and once again, Niamh.

Basically, learning from what things worked, didn’t work etc we know we don’t want to over complicate things, we want simple characters with a funny punch line that it beautifully modelled, rigged and animated.

We came up with some really funny idea’s and also some very random idea’s containing animals, banana’s, dogs on skateboards, planets and fat cats.

On thursday (4 days from now) we have to present our pitch and film idea.

Character Concept’s

Through the past fortnight we have been delving deeply into the ideation process and came up with 50+ ideas. Some obviously not very strong and others that we saw potential in and began developing more until we finally and 5 idea’s that we really liked.

Penguin Panic

One idea we came up with was the idea of a little penguin who would stand on the edge of an iceberg trying to catch fish as they jumped out of the water until eventually a killer whale would emerge from the water and swallow the penguin and iceberg etc. We thought it would have good comic effect for a 15 second animation but felt that penguin’s have been a little over done in film lately.

Here are a few of my concepts

Dino Disaster

A different story we had was the idea of having a few dinosaurs having an outdoor party when a meteor or something that resembles ‘the big bang’ crashes into earth and kills them all, then a dino in a Hawaiian shirt with a tray of margaritas walks into the screen wondering were everyone is.

Here are some of my concepts for this idea.

The Life of Fli

Another idea that we really liked was the idea of a fruit fly’s life span. We would show him progress from childhood to old age as backgrounds change and what he wears change, example school uniform, graduation, walking stick and beard etc, instead of dying we would have a  fly swat come in and squish him, we all really liked this idea however one group member did’t like it and couldn’t be sold on the idea.

Here is my concepts for this idea

Much Birds, Such Music

Another idea we had was for a little bird to walk over to an ipod and push a button have happy music come out and he would dance, then he would the button again and death metal would blast out, scare the little bird and he run into a wall and knock himself out, however not all group members could agree on this idea either and so we developed it further.

Here are the concepts for this bird

We developed this story and came up with the idea of two birds, a small, fat, cute bird and an ’emo bird’. The emo bird will be sitting listening to the ipod minding his own business when the little bird comes into screen and tries to talk to him, he cant hear him so he tries to change the song, when he does this the emo bird will push him away, in anger the little bird will walk over jump on top of the ipod and begin to bounce and bounce changing the song repeatedly until the ipod begins to smoke and finally explodes, once the smoke fades we will see the too birds, black and crispy.

Here are my concepts for the ’emo bird’.
