Researching Illustrators

Today in our lecture we were shown some beautiful book covers made out of threads by Jillian Tamaki. We were shown the covers of Black Beauty, Emma and The Secret Garden.

I would love to do something like this but with only having 3 weeks for 3 books, along with all my other work, i know i would never get it done on time. However, the color and composition is something i take and work with in my own designs.

Back in the 1960’s book covers were much more simple, and when paperbacks came in they wanted the cheapest option available so Penguin hired a guy called Romek Marber who designed a layout and colour for each theme of book, example all crime novels were made in green and black and all had a simple print design.

We were also shown work from an illustrator called David Gentleman who designed covers for all of Shakespeare’s work, they all have a similar style

Another set of books i really liked was the Great Journey Series, each book has a mirrored image with the text in the center, perhaps i could take some ideas from this.

Another set of books i adore the cover to is The Great Food Series- each cover is based on ceramics, and they’re beautiful, they remind me of batik, which i did a lot of at GCSE and A Level, perhaps this is another way i could go with the book covers.
